Le relazioni tra demografia ed economia sono difficili da determinare, anche se la ricerca recente sembra sottolineare le forti correlazioni tra variabili demografiche e socio-economiche nelle popolazioni del passato. Sia negli studi di carattere locale che nei grandi progetti di ricerca, in particolare nel Pricenton Fertility Project sulla transizione della fecondità, solitamente le grandezze socioeconomiche sono difficilmente presenti o integrabili nelle analisi quantitative, a causa soprattutto della scarsa disponibilità e della natura dei dati relativi agli aspetti dell'economia e della società in epoca storica. L'obiettivo di questo lavoro è quello di esaminare se la distribuzione geografica dei modelli di fecondità in Catalogna si avvicina alla distribuzione delle categorie socio-professionali prevalenti sul territorio. Il lavoro ha anche scopo comparativo in quanto si confrontano i risultati catalani con la distribuzione geografica dei modelli di fecondità nei territori confinanti francesi del XIX secolo. |

The decline of the Catalan fertility in the XIX century. Relations between geography of the reproductive behaviour and socio-professional differences The relationship between demography and economy tend to be difficult to determine, in spite of the fact that recent research reveals a strong correlation between socio-economic and demographic variables in populations in the past. Generally, socio-economic variables are poorly integrated in the analysis of demographic systems. This applies to large demographic projects, especially the Pricenton Fertility Project, as well as to local monographs. The reason lies in the nature of the available sources and the quality of the socio-economic data. The goal of this paper is to examine whether the geographical distribution of fertility patterns in Catalonia followed a territorial dynamic in relation to the socio-occupational categories of the population. We compare this pattern to the geographical distribution of fertility patterns in French neighbouring territories in the 19th century. |
