Easy-to-understand access services in multimodal contexts: training and practice

Resum: Could existing access services such as subtitling or audio description be made easier to understand? Could existing media access professionals expand their skills and provide new easy language services? What type of training should be offered? These three questions may be seen as the starting point of the EASIT (Easy Access for Social Inclusion Training) project, which aims to define the skills of these new professional profiles, propose a curriculum, and create training materials. The first step in EASIT was to distribute a European survey inquiring about the training and practice of easy-to-understand language. The second step was to carry out a series of focus groups in which media access professionals and easy-to-understand professionals sat together to discuss the feasibility of developing hybrid access services. New approaches emerged from these discussion groups: some of the EASIT assumptions were challenged and new proposals were put forward. The third step was to define a series of new profiles and the skills they should acquire, followed by the definition of a training curriculum at university and a training proposal for a MOOC. EASIT is currently developing open access educational resources. The presentation aims to provide a general overview of the project and its main results so far, but, most importantly, it aims to discuss the impact easy language could have on existing access services and audiovisual transfer modes and, subsequently, on the training of future experts. The focus will be on easy-to-understand language in a multimodal setting, one of the key topics in the panel call.
