| Abstract: |
This paper focuses on the history of two words: Greek αλψος and Spanish "albarazo" both meaning "leprosy", which is characterized by a white colour. Based on literary sources and archaeological evidence, the author states that the word for leprosy depicts, in most languages, the roughness, the colour, and the aspect of the illness itself. And this is not only in the Indoeuropean languages, but in the Semitic family as well. Through a semantic analysis of the word "albarazo" as used by Cervantes, the author gets to the conclusion that it should be considered not just of arabic origin, as commonly accepted, but seen as a term cognated with Greek and with some other Indoeuropean languages. |
