Abstract:	El relat de l'estada a la península Ibèrica i al nord del Magrib del matrimoni nord-americà format per l'escriptora Elisabeth Williams Champney (1850-1922) i pel pintor James Wells Champney (1843-1903) constitueix un testimoni exemplar de l'afany viatger que, a partir del final de la guerra de Secessió Americana (1860-1865), van sentir molts artistes i intel·lectuals de l'altra banda de l'Atlàntic. Altrament, il·lustra l'admiració que despertaven Marià Fortuny (1838-1874) i Henri Regnault (1843-1871), desapareguts pocs anys abans, en els artistes joves. El seu triomf estroncat de manera abrupta per la mort prematura els convertí en veritables mites que fascinaren nombrosos pintors novells d'esperit inquiet. La narració del viatge dels Champney és un autèntic itinerari devocional pels escenaris i per la iconografia d'aquests pintors venerats. Tanmateix, la circumstància que aquest tour es fes pocs anys després del traspàs dels artistes, va permetre als Champney conèixer pràcticament el mateix context que visqueren Fortuny i Regnault els primers anys setanta, la qual cosa converteix el text en una font documental significativa, fins ara mai tinguda en compte en els treballs historicoartístics que versen sobre aquests dos artistes de trajectòria fulgurant.
Abstract:	The story of the visit to the Iberian peninsular and the north of the Maghreb by the American couple, the painter James Wells Champney (1843-1903) and the writer Elisabeth Williams Champney (1850-1922), is an excellent example of the urge to travel which, after the end of the American Civil War (1860-1865), was common in many artists and intellectuals on the other side of the Atlantic. Furthermore, it illustrates the young artists' admiration for Marià Fortuny (1838-1874) and Henri Regnault (1843-1871) who had died a few years before. The premature deaths of the latter abruptly cut short their triumphant careers and turned them into veritable legends which fascinated the restless spirits of numerous young artists. The narrative of the Champneys' journey is an authentic devotional tour of the scenes and iconography of these venerated painters and the fact that their tour was made only a few years after the artists' deaths allowed the Champneys to share practically the same experiences as those lived by Fortuny and Regnault at the beginning of the 1870s. This makes the text an important documentary source which until now has been ignored by the historical-artistic studies of those write about the shining careers of these two artists.
