Abstract:	En 1865, cuando el movimiento espiritista gozaba de una gran popularidad en Francia, Théophile Gautier publicó la novela corta Spirite: nouvelle fantastique. En ella se cuenta la historia de Lavinia, una joven que regresa desde el más allá en forma de espíritu para contactar con Malivert, de quien estaba secretamente enamorada. La novela fue acogida con entusiasmo por los espiritistas españoles, como lo demuestran las diversas traducciones de las que fue objeto en un breve lapso de tiempo. Tras analizar los rasgos más relevantes de la novela y situarla en su contexto histórico, compararemos dos de sus traducciones españolas: la publicada de forma anónima por la revista espiritista La Irradiación en 1894 y la versión más reciente, realizada por el poeta Guillermo Carnero en 1971 (ambas se titularon Espirita). La comparación de estas dos versiones tan alejadas en el tiempo revela cómo ha influido en los procedimientos de traducción la distinta actitud hacia el espiritismo por parte de ambos traductores.
Abstract:	In 1865, when the Spiritualist movement enjoyed great popularity in France, Théophile Gautier published the short novel Spirite: nouvelle fantastique. It tells the story of Lavinia, a young girl who returns from the beyond in spirit form in order to make contact with Malivert, with whom she was in love. The novel was received with enthusiasm by the Spanish spiritualists, as evidenced by the various translations published in a short period of time. After analyzing the most relevant features of the novel and placing it in its historical context, we will compare two of its Spanish translations: the one published anonymously by the spiritist magazine La Irradiación in1894 and the most recent version, made by the poet Guillermo Carnero in 1971 (both of them were entitled Espirita). The comparison of these two versions so distant in time reveals how the different attitude towards Spiritism assumed by both translators has influenced their translation procedures.
