En las fuentes altomedievales, los prodigios pueden ser interpretados de dos maneras: o se trata de un acto divino, como un fenómeno excepcional que manifiesta la intervención de Dios en la historia, o, al contrario, son acciones del enemigo del género humano, el Diablo. Los textos cristianos, en particular, en la hagiografía, narran cómo el Diablo o sus discípulos tratan de engañar a los creyentes por medio de milagros o haciéndose pasar por Dios o sus elegidos. En este contexto, un personaje clave es el Anticristo. En la escatología cristiana, el falso profeta tendrá el poder de engañar incluso a los santos y, con su llegada, se multiplicarán los fenómenos sobrenaturales, señales del fin del mundo inminente. En este trabajo, se propone explorar cómo se consideraba el prodigio en la época altomedieval a través de un género particular: los falsos prodigios o los milagros engañosos que preludian el fin del mundo y el reino del Anticristo. Así se estudiarán algunos de los relatos acerca de la figura del Anticristo que se escribieron y/o se leyeron en las comunidades cristianas de la Península Ibérica del siglo viii al siglo xi. Se abordarán, asimismo, sus representaciones gráficas, haciendo especial hincapié en el programa iconográfico de los Beatos. Finalmente, se utilizará la leyenda del Anticristo como hilo conductor en el análisis de las tradiciones cristianas y su propia interacción con las tradiciones judías y musulmanas en el contexto mediterráneo. |

In early medieval sources, prodigies can be interpreted in two ways: either as divine acts -exceptional phenomena that manifest the intervention of God in history- or, on the contrary, as actions of the enemy of the human race: the Devil. Christian texts, especially in hagiography, narrate how the Devil or his disciples try to deceive believers through miracles or by pretending to be God or his chosen ones. In this context, a key figure is the Antichrist. In Christian eschatology, the false prophet will have the power to deceive even the saints and, with his arrival, supernatural phenomena will multiply, as signs of the imminent end of the world. This paper sets out to explore how prodigies were regarded in the early medieval period through one particular genre: the false prodigies or the deceitful miracles that heralded the end of the world and the kingdom of the Antichrist. This involves studying some of the stories about the figure of the Antichrist that were written and/or read in the Christian communities of the Iberian Peninsula from the 8th to the 11th century, together with their iconographic representations, mainly in the Beatus manuscripts. Finally, the legend of the Antichrist is used as the common thread in the study of Christian traditions and their interaction with Jewish and Muslim ones in the Mediterranean context. |
