Women living with HIV (WLH) lack evidence-based information about reproductive options while managing pressures from family, clinicians, and communities to give up the idea of having children. As the reproduction intentions of WLH are not well understood, stigmatizing behaviors force them to hide their disease to avoid rejection by their family, partner, and social networks. [...]

1.9 MB A socio-legal analysis of health outcomes, disparities and determinants among migrant and native women in Spain / Fraser, Hortense ; Permanyer Ugartemendia, Ignacio, dir. ; Anthonius Spijker, Jeroen Johannes, dir.
In this study, we set out to determine the impact of two major laws on health outcomes in Spain, namely: RDL16/2012 which tied health care more to social security entitlements and disentitled a number of migrants from previously guaranteed right to universal access to health care; and Organic Law 2/2010, which allowed for the voluntary interruption of pregnancy, generally up to fourteen weeks of pregnancy. 149 p, 1.2 MB Three essays on health and violence against women / Tur Prats, Ana ; Puig-Junoy, Jaume, dir. ; Vera-Hernández, Marcos, dir. ; López García, Miguel Ángel, tut. (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament d'Economia Aplicada) ; Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament d'Economia Aplicada
This doctoral dissertation is divided into three chapters. The first one is related to health economics, and the second and third analyse violence against women. In the first chapter, co-authored with Jaume Puig-Junoy and Marcos Vera-Hernández, we estimate the price-elasticity of prescription drugs exploiting three unique features of the Spanish health system (1) the co-payment of prescription drug drops from 40% (10% for chronic diseases drugs) to 0% upon retirement, while the co-payment for the rest of health care services remains constant; (2) retirement jumps discontinuously at age 65, the legal retirement age, which allows us to use a Regression Discontinuity design to disentangle price from selection effects; and (3) absence of deductibles or caps in yearly or monthly out-of-pocket expenditure, which simplifies the computation of elasticities. [...]
